Buying a Used LVD Press Brake? 7 Checks I Wish I'd Made

I've been handling equipment purchases for a sheet metal fabrication shop for about nine years, and I've personally made six significant mistakes buying used machines—totaling roughly $28,000 in wasted budget. If the previous owner's license isn't transferable, or they've already moved it to their new machine, you're in for a headache.

I learned this the hard way on my first purchase. The controller worked fine—or rather, the controller itself was fine, but the offline programming software was locked to the seller's account. $1,400 and a two-week wait to untangle it. If I remember correctly, that delay pushed our first production run late and cost us a small order. Not a catastrophic loss, but completely avoidable.

Ask for: the controller model, software version, evidence the license transfers, and the manuals. If the seller hesitates on any of it, that's a red flag.

2. Stop Trusting the Hour Meter—Demand Maintenance History

People think low hours means a better machine. Actually, it's often the other way around. A machine that ran two shifts a day with routine service can be in better shape than one that sat idle in a warehouse for four years.

Idle machines develop problems. Hydraulic seals dry out. Moisture condenses in the tank and contaminates the oil. I once looked at a 3,000-hour machine that needed a $6,000 hydraulic overhaul, while a 24,000-hour machine with documented maintenance ran trouble-free for years. Every seller will happily bend a 2mm sheet in the middle of the bed at 90 degrees. That's a nice demo. It's also nearly useless if your actual jobs involve thick material or long off-center bends.

In September 2022, I brought a 6mm plate, 1.5 meters wide, to inspect an LVD press brake. I asked the seller to bend it on the outer edge. He looked at me like I was wasting his time. He wasn't wrong about the demo being disruptive—but my test piece revealed that the ram deflected measurably under off-center load. The machine couldn't hold parallelism across its full bed on thick material. The earlier demo had looked flawless. My test piece told the real story.

4. Inspect the Hydraulics, and Test the Oil

Check the cylinder seals, valve blocks, fittings, and hoses. Inspect the oil tank breather cap for cracks. And take an oil sample—this catches some of the most expensive hidden problems, which is why most buyers skip it.

One machine I bought in 2023 had a spotless exterior. Pressure-washed, freshly painted. The oil analysis came back with enough water contamination to embarrass the sales agent. A cracked breather cap had been letting humid air into the tank for years. $2,800 and a full flush later, the machine was fine. But if I'd skipped the test, we'd have found out after moving it 300 miles—which is exactly the wrong time.

Takeaway: a commercial oil analysis runs well under $150 and takes a few days. It's the cheapest insurance you'll ever buy for a machine purchase.

5. Test the Back Gauge and Check Tooling Compatibility

Two issues here, both expensive if ignored.

First, the back gauge. Worn ball screws, loose linear rails, or drifting left-right arms mean your parts come out wrong in subtle ways. I bought a second machine after I should have known better, and it had about 0.8mm of play in the right back gauge arm. For our tolerance requirements, that was disastrous. $3,100 and a week of downtime to rebuild. Test the gauge at multiple depths, push on the arms, and watch for play before you commit.

Second, tooling. LVD is a Belgian company, and depending on the machine's era, the ram may accept European-style tooling or an adapted system. The clamping arrangement, the die holder, the punch lengths—none of it is guaranteed to match what you already own. The question everyone asks is "what's the tonnage?" The question they should ask is "what tooling does the ram accept, and what's included in the sale?" 6. Safety Systems and Electrical Compliance Aren't Optional

A used machine may predate current safety standards, and retrofits aren't cheap. Per OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147, lockout/tagout procedures apply to any machine with unexpected energization risk. ANSI B11.3 sets the American standard for power press brake safety. If the light curtains, two-hand controls, or emergency stops don't meet current expectations, you could face thousands in retrofits—and the liability sits with you, not the seller.

I'm not a safety auditor, so I'll keep this simple: ask for the safety documentation, verify the light curtain model and function, and get confirmation that any recent recertifications are genuine. A machine that looks cheap can be cheap because of a compliance backlog.

7. Confirm Service and Parts Support in Writing

Before you commit, check whether LVD's service network—or a qualified third party—can support that specific machine in your area. For a 10- or 15-year-old press brake, some parts become obsolete. "We'll find something that works" is not a maintenance plan.

Buying used is a poor fit when you're running a just-in-time production line where a week of downtime means missed deadlines, when you need certification documentation for a customer audit, or when nobody on your team understands hydraulics.
