For a press brake, look at the ram and bed, the back gauge, the tooling, and the hydraulic unit. For a metal laser cutting machine, inspect the cutting head, lens, focus nozzle, guide rails, and bellows. Step 6: Get Service History and Maintenance Records
Ask for a maintenance log with oil changes, chiller service, coolant replacement, laser gas cylinder changes, and controller software updates. For a used LVD press brake for sale, check hydraulic oil test results if they're available. For an LVD fiber laser, ask for dates of optic replacements and a readout of resonator hours.
The 'always get three quotes' advice sounds prudent, but it ignores the transaction cost of evaluating a machine with no records. A lower price might mean a $20,000 repair in the first six months. Compare total risk, not just the listing price.
Step 7: Add Up Every Real Cost
The listing price is only the start. Here's the cost list I use for any used machine:
- Freight and trucking
- Rigging and lifting
- Leveling and anchoring
- Electrical work for three-phase power
- Air compressor and air dryer
- Fume extraction for laser cutting
- Tooling, clamps, and die holders
- Software license transfer and training
- First-year spares: nozzles, lenses, hydraulic hoses, filters
In our 2024 vendor consolidation project, we found that a low quote was 12% higher once we added these costs. That's not a national average—it's our internal number. But it's the kind of estimate nobody puts on a spec sheet.
Total cost of ownership includes accessories, installation, downtime, and rework. The cheapest quote often isn't the lowest total cost.
Honest Limitations: When This Checklist Doesn't Fit
This checklist is for buyers who already know they need a press brake or a laser cutting machine. It's not a full comparison of buying new versus used. It's also not a recommendation to avoid LVD's newer machines.
If you need a new machine with a warranty, maintenance contract, and financing, used equipment may not be the right call. If you're running high-volume production around the clock, the risk of an unknown history is probably not worth it. And if you only need to add serial numbers to small parts, an industrial metal laser cutting machine will be overkill—a steel laser engraver might be the better investment.
And yes, that brings me back to the office question: laser printer versus inkjet printer. That comparison is about toner, ink, paper sizes, and print quality. A metal laser cutter doesn't print anything. It cuts sheet metal with a focused beam. You can usually tell by the price and the weight.
