“Which Laser Engraver Should I Buy?” A Buyer’s Guide From Someone Who Wasted Money on the Wrong One

“Which laser engraver should I buy?” I get this question more than any other. There are cheap diode lasers on Amazon, and there are industrial machines that cost more than a car. The truth is, they aren’t competing with each other. They’re answering different questions.

A bit of context: I spent six years in printer sales before moving into production management at a print and fabrication shop. I love spec sheets. But in 2021 I bought the wrong laser engraver for our shop. It cost us around $1,850 in wasted materials and rework—maybe $1,700, my records are messy—plus a repeat order we never got. This is the guide I wish I’d had before that purchase.

Which Laser Engraver Should I Buy? Start With Your Scenario

There is no universal answer. There’s only “what are you going to produce, and who’s going to see it?” Once I started sorting buyers into groups, the machine choices felt less confusing.

  • Scenario A: You’re a hobbyist or doing small craft sales.
  • Scenario B: You’re a small business taking paying clients.
  • Scenario C: You’re a metal fabrication shop adding laser cutting or marking.

If you can’t decide which one you belong in, don’t buy anything yet. Read the “how to tell” part at the end first.

Scenario A: Hobbyist or Craft-Market Seller

If you’re making items for your own kitchen or selling a few engraved cutting boards at a weekend market, a Vevor laser engraver—or another budget diode laser—can be a fine entry point. I’m not going to bash it. I bought one after our bigger machine broke, and it taught me a few things about process.

Keep your expectations realistic. A diode laser is slow, and it’s not great on bare metal unless you use marking spray or upgrade to a fiber laser. It also needs flat, consistent material to produce clean results. The first time I used one for a client gift, the wood grain had a dark streak right through the logo. The client noticed. (Thankfully, they were kind about it.)

Prices for budget diode units move around depending on the model and sale date. As of January 2025, publicly listed prices for entry-level laser engravers were roughly $150–$350. Those prices were from public listings at the time I checked, and they change. Verify current rates before you order.

Scenario B: You’re Running a Small Business and Clients Matter

This is where I made my biggest mistake. In March 2023, I tried to get by with a budget laser for paid jobs. One order—about 40 pieces of acrylic—came out with inconsistent burn depths. I approved it because I was in a hurry. The client approved it too, but only after a heavy discount. We didn’t get the re-order. A $2,000 repeat order disappeared because I tried to save $300 on a machine.

Here’s what I learned: when your name goes on the product, the laser is no longer just a machine. It’s your brand. A slightly off engraving doesn’t make the client think “budget machine.” It makes them think “sloppy company.” Quality isn’t a feature. It’s the packaging your service comes in.

For this stage, I recommend a CO₂ laser with a known brand and local service. Plan to spend somewhere in the $2,000–$6,000 range for a machine that can handle daily small-batch work. It hurt to spend that much after an earlier mistake, but the consistency was visible right away. Customer feedback on our first batch after switching was noticeably better—maybe 30–40% more positive comments, though we weren’t tracking it formally.

(Should mention: if you’re adding this to a print shop, treat the laser like a proof press. Setup and test files take time. Don’t rush the first few client jobs.)

Scenario C: You Already Run a Sheet Metal Shop

This is where LVD comes into the story. LVD is probably best known around here for LVD press brakes. At one point our shop ran a used LVD press brake for bending enclosures. It was old, but it was stubborn. That’s the reputation LVD press brakes have: they don’t quit.

So when people ask about adding an LVD fiber laser, I take it seriously. A fiber laser cuts and marks metal at production speed. It’s not a toy. It’s a capital investment. In my experience, a small industrial fiber laser setup can run well into five figures, and the price is almost always quoted because the configuration matters. Some shops pay more for automation and extra service. You shouldn’t buy one just because the brand matches your press brake.

The right reason to buy an LVD fiber laser is that your current metal parts are bottlenecking your shop. If you’re regularly sending laser cutting or engraving out to another shop, then it’s worth evaluating. If you’re just curious about fiber lasers, wait. I’ve seen businesses order a fiber laser before they’d even finished paying off their press brake, and that’s a painful way to learn about cash flow.

One more thought: LVD built its reputation on press brakes because quality showed up in the bend. The same logic applies to their laser line. But a brand name doesn’t justify an early purchase. The machine has to fit the system you already run.

The Contrarian Scenario: None of These

This is the one that surprises people. If you only need engraved products once in a while, don’t buy a laser. Outsource it. There are plenty of shops with idle capacity. You’ll pay per piece, learn what the market asks for, and avoid a depreciating machine sitting in the corner.

I wish I had done this in 2022. We had two clients who wanted engraved signs, and I lost a week of production time trying to figure things out. I was so proud of owning a laser that I ignored the opportunity cost. (Ugh.)

How to Tell Which Scenario You’re In

Stop looking at laser specs for a second. Answer these five questions honestly:

  1. How many jobs per month will actually be laser jobs? If it’s fewer than ten, outsource or start with a budget machine.
  2. What materials will you run? Wood, acrylic, and leather are fine on CO₂. Bare metal means fiber, and that changes the budget.
  3. Who sees the output? If it’s a client who can choose someone else, quality matters more than speed.
  4. Do you already run metal fabrication equipment? If you have an LVD press brake and a steady flow of metal parts, a fiber laser becomes a stronger investment.
  5. Are you ready for the learning curve? Focus height, lens cleaning, test cuts, material variations. It’s not like a printer.

One thing I’ve learned from years in printer sales and production: buyers tend to overestimate how much they’ll use a machine in the first month and underestimate their quality standards. I’m not 100% sure why. Maybe it’s the YouTube videos. But it happens.

So, which laser engraver should I buy? My honest answer: choose the one that matches the work you have, not the work you’re dreaming about. If that’s a $250 Vevor, great. If it’s an LVD fiber laser, only after you can see the backlog. At least, that’s been my experience with small-batch production. Your numbers might differ. Just don’t repeat mine.
