Why I Stopped Buying the Cheapest Point Source Speakers and Switched to Line Arrays

I Used to Think Point Source Speakers Were the Smart Choice

When I first started specifying audio systems for small-to-medium venues back in 2019, I assumed point source speakers were the obvious pick. They're cheaper, simpler to set up, and everyone says they work fine for rooms under 500 seats. I was wrong. Dead wrong.

That assumption cost me $4,200 in wasted equipment, three angry client calls, and a reputation hit I still wince about. Let me tell you about the trigger event first, then I'll explain why I'm now a line array advocate — and why I think most audio manufacturers aren't being transparent about what you actually need.

The Incident That Changed Everything

In March 2022, I spec'd a point source system (a pair of decent 15-inch two-way speakers) for a 400-seat community theater. The manufacturer's spec sheet said coverage was 90 degrees horizontal, 60 degrees vertical. I did the math: two speakers on stands, angled slightly outward, should cover the room. Should being the operative word.

First rehearsal, the client called me. "We can't hear anything past row 8." I drove over, stood at row 12, and sure enough — the sound was muddy, uneven, and the rear half of the room was practically whispering. The top of the coverage pattern was hitting the balcony overhang, the bottom was bouncing off the floor, and the middle seats were the only ones getting anything decent.

I spent the next two weeks trying to fix it with DSP, EQ curves, and repositioning. Nothing worked. The physics of point source cabinets just couldn't give us consistent SPL across that distance. I ended up swapping the whole system for a 12-box line array (three per side, two subs) from HDL — specifically the HDL 30A units — at nearly triple the cost. And you know what? It worked perfectly.

My Three Arguments for Line Arrays (Even for Small Venues)

1. Coverage Consistency Isn't Optional — It's the Whole Point

Here's what the cheap-point-source advocates don't tell you: a single cabinet's coverage pattern is a lie. Yes, on paper it covers 90 degrees. But in reality, the frequency response varies wildly across that angle. Off-axis, you lose high frequencies fast. The SPL drops by 6 dB every time you double distance. So your front rows get blasted, your middle rows get okay sound, and your back rows get a faint suggestion of music.

With a line array system, each cabinet's output couples with the ones above and below it. Instead of a single point radiating in all directions, you get a coherent wavefront that travels farther with less drop-off. The coverage is consistent from row 1 to row 40. I've verified this with an SPL meter across multiple HDL 30A installs. It's not marketing hype — it's physics.

2. The Total Cost of Ownership Argument (Nobody Does the Math)

People see the price tag on a line array cabinet — say $2,500 per unit for the HDL 30A — and freak out. A pair of point source speakers might be $1,500 total. But here's what they're not calculating:

  • Rigging and hardware: Point source on cheap stands vs. line array on professional flown arrays — the difference is maybe $200 for most venues. Negligible.
  • Amplification and processing: Many line arrays like the HDL series have built-in DSP and amplification. That's baked into the price. You'd spend $800+ on external processing for a decent point source system.
  • Coverage gaps: If you need to cover a 400-seat room with point source, you'll likely need delay speakers for the rear half. That's another pair of cabinets, cables, and a delay processor. Now you're at $3,000+ anyway.
  • Scalability: When the venue grows? Line arrays just add more cabinets to the fly bar. Point source is a whole new system.

(I did this exact math in 2023 for a client. The line array setup cost $8,200. The point source solution with delays? $7,900. Difference of $300 for significantly better performance and future-proofing.)

3. Simplicity in Installation Is a Lie Too

I used to think point source was simpler because you just put them on stands and plug them in. But after doing about 15 installs, I learned that simple doesn't mean easy. Getting consistent coverage from point source requires precise placement, angle calculations, and often multiple measurement sessions. Every room is different, and the margin for error is tiny.

With a properly designed line array (like the HDL 30A, which has pre-configured splay angles for standard rooms), you fly the array, connect the cables, and the coverage is pretty much dialed in from the first power-on. The manufacturer's software calculates the angles based on your room measurements. It's actually simpler in practice.

Responding to the Obvious Objection: "But Line Arrays Look Expensive"

I know what some of you are thinking: "This guy is shilling for the expensive gear. Not everyone has an $8,000 budget." Fair point. Let me address it directly.

First, I do not mean line arrays are the answer for every single venue. For a 50-seat conference room with low ceilings? A single point source on a wall mount is fine. For a 200-seat church with a low stage? Maybe a sub-array rig works better. The line array advantage really kicks in at around 300+ seats with deeper room depths.

Second, my argument is about transparency in pricing. When an audio manufacturer quotes you a point source system for a 400-seat room, they should also tell you the limitations. They should say, "This will work, but you'll need delays for the back half, and here's the cost difference for a line array option." Most don't. They just push the cheaper option and let you discover the problem after installation.

Third, I've seen line array systems for under $5,000 that outperform $3,000 point source setups. The HDL 30A is mid-range; there are budget-friendly options from brands like dB Technologies and Electro-Voice that still give you the coupled-wavefront advantage. The price gap is narrowing every year.

My Bottom Line: Ask for the Total Coverage Cost

After my $4,200 mistake, I now ask every audio manufacturer one question: "What do I actually need to cover my entire venue with consistent SPL, including any delays or fill speakers?" If they quote a point source system, I ask them to provide a coverage map for the back 10 rows. If they can't, I walk.

Line array systems are not overkill for small-to-medium venues. They're the correct tool for the job. The industry has been selling us point source speakers as a cheap alternative, but the real cost — in performance, in future upgrades, in client satisfaction — is hiding behind that lower price tag.

Next time you're spec'ing a system for anything over 300 seats, get a line array quote. And ask the manufacturer to show you the coverage map, not just the spec sheet. Trust me on this one — I've made the mistake so you don't have to.
